It’s a “shoot first, ask questions later” world after the apocalypse. After a perilous escape from the nuclear wreckage of their Washington, DC suburb in Ashes, Ashes, the surviving kids reach their destination, a mountain safe house, only to find their troubles have just begun. There are no adults and the kids are still all alone. Fifteen-year-old Nester Bartlett's biggest worries had been growing up black in America... but the nuclear apocalypse has changed all of the rules. Now, instead of getting good grades and struggling against the negative stereotypes against African American men, he's fighting just to stay alive. With no skills for his new life of tending animals, maintaining fires and defending their mountain cabin against intruders, he's unprepared for the threats that bombard him and his friends from the weather, from escaped prisoners from a nearby correctional facility and from their own grief over their losses. Then, as nuclear winter sweeps over their mountain home killing crops and animals, a medical emergency threatens one of their number. Nester must make a desperate choice that shatters their little community and irrevocably alters their chances for survival.

I really want to like this series. The story line is actually pretty good. The characters are likable. The editing is horrible, however. Ir does not appear to have been edited at all. The strange thing is the writing leaves out many words like: to and the, I wondered if the author was a native English speaker. The more I read it seems that some words are used incorrectly or are not relative to the sentence at all... It almost seems like a nonhuman edited the book. Some computer decided the use of the words were superfluous and changed or deleted them and then nobody even gave the books a read through to check for accuracy as the mistakes are so frequent and obvious. This author needs to slow down and reread what was written. I have this on my Kindle so I have started to highlight the errors and am surprised at how frequent they are and how consistently they appear.

Ashes Ashes #2 Snow and Smoke eBook Karyn Folan Reviews

I have been very pleased with this series and book two is no different. Not a lot happening so it seems a bit slow but well enough written to keep me coming back for more.
All these books are so exciting. Can't put it down. The only thing I feels is wrong with is the writer should have someone proof read it. We found a lot of mistakes in the writing.
This book was pretty good.I was not excited about it as I was the first. The book it's cool because it is from a different persons perspective than the first. Trying not to give too much away.if you read the first....give this a try.
This story moves quickly and keeps you interested. Most of the prepped fiction does not deal with nuclear fallout so it frightening to understand the reality of a never ending winter. I look forward to the next installment.
Maybe for YA reader's but captured my attention and held it through two books. Can't wait for number 3. Reality at it's worst, bombs and high school kids left to survive.
I was a little bothered by the first person change from the first book to a different character. I was not fond of the appearance/conversations with his dead brother. However, I'm curious enough to find out what happens next, that I will likely read the next in the series.
I only discovered Ms Folan with this series. I read each book back to back as soon as I had or indeed in some cases didn't have time. Enjoyable reading. Well edited & the characters came alive on the pages. I got quite upset when favourites didn't make it etc. I am now beginning the Next series & hope that it lives up to the previous one. The series had a great spin on the usual TEOTWAWKI line. The only issue I had was that I just had to know what happened next & next. You get the picture. Congrats Karyn your characters & their interactions with each other became more & more real to me as the books progressed. Great books get the whole series at once because you wont be able to resist after book 1.
